Wax is applied to the running surface of the skis to gain more speed in the inrun. On the cross country skies, there are different surfaces which are prepared with different waxes to enable speedy decents and a good grip while ascending.

There are many different kinds of waxes and so teams have their experts to prepare their skis as well as possible for the current snow and weather conditions.
