The experts might have already known after the jumping that the Japanese would be the one to beat today. With 133.5 m under slight tailwind Watabe not only showed the longest jump of the day but also had a good lead ahead of Tino Edelmann. The 23-year-old already showed various times this season that he can also do well in the track, now he had to prove his mental strength to win a race.
The team World Champion fron 2007 proved that on the final day of the Super Weekend in Val di Fiemme. Already after one kilometer he doubled the lead ahead of Edelmann, who worked together with Austrian Bernhard Gruber. But their work didn't pay off, on the final lap the group around Mikko Kokslien and Bill Demong closed the gap. In this large group, also with World Cup leader Jason Lamy Chappuis, the two took the lead and set the pace. So also the man with the yellow leader's bib could not keep up in the final lap and finished eighth.
But also the strong performance in the race was not enough to catch up with Watabe. He won only 3.0 seconds ahead of the competition and celebrate his first World Cup victory. Watabe is now third in the overall World Cup ranking, 215 points behind Lamy Chappuis, but only one point behind Italian Alessandro Pittin.
