Watabe won the jumping and was in the lead for the whole race, at first alone, then after about two kilometers together with Gruber, and final phase in the slipstream of Kokslien. He started the race as tenth, 46 seconds behind, and moved up place after place like already on the day before. Also World Cup leader Jason Lamy Chappuis could not keep up with the pace of the Norwegian and finished fifth, behind Germany's Fabian Riessle.
But the French had no chance to fight for the victory in this race. Kokslien broke away of the group and was chasing the leading duo. On the final meters he increased the pace again and decided the competition. Watabe defeated Gruber in the fight for the second place and could score some valuable points for the overall World Cup ranking.
The the next group there was some fighting going on for the best positions in the final sprint, Alessandro Pittin fell and finished eighth. Fabian Riessle, who defeated Jason Lamy Chappuis, had the most strength in the sprint. They were followed by Norway's Joergen Graabak and Johannes Rydzek of Germany.
Both competitions in central Asia ended with well-deserved victories of Mikko Kokslien, who seemed unbeatable in cross country. On a compact and clearly arranged and natural course many spectators saw two exciting nordic combined races. With a few improvements Almaty proved that they want to be included in the World Cup calendar of nordic combined also in the future.
