After the impressive win of his opponent Akito Watabe of Japan yesterday, Jason Lamy Chappuis fought back. With a great performance in the race the French achieved a clear victory in the second competition in Klingenthal. It was his fifth victory this season. Like already on the day before Austrian Bernhard Gruber was second. In the final sprint he defeated Czech Tomas Slavik.

"I knew I had to ski fast in the race because my jump was not so good", said Jason Lamy Chappuis about the competition. The jumping, with which Lamy Chappuis was not satisfied, alredy took place a day before. Snowfall and wind made ski jumping impossible on Sunday and so the result of the provisional competition round counted for the cross country race. Norwegian Haavard Klementsen won this round, but he could not do well in today's race.

Lamy Chappuis could close the gap of 42 seconds soon in the race. After a short period with a slower pace, when the leading group with Lamy Chappuis, Gruber, Slvid, Francois Braud and Wilhem Denifl was about the lose the lead against Eric Frenzel and Jan Schmid, the man with the yellow bib took the lead and kept the pace high. First Braud and Denifl and later also the rest of the group, could not keep up with the favorite. "After closing the gap I had to rest for a lap and then I wanted to decide the race on the final climb. This was a very important day in the fight for the overall World Cup", said Lamy Chappuis.

With his 20th World Cup win the reigning World and Olympic Champion extend his lead to Akito Watabe. Watabe, who won the first competition yesterday, had bad luck because his jump in the provisional competition round was not good and so he was far back. He finished only 19th, behind his younger brother Yoshito.

With two second places, the weekend was great for Bernhard Gruber. "When Jason attacked I decided not to follow and keep my own pace", said Bernhard Gruber. "In spite of the difficult conditions the race went well for me."

It was some kind of a home competition for Tomas Slavik. His team trains in Klingenthal a lot and the 30-year-old achieved his first ever podium result today. So far his best result in the World Cup was a fifth place in Klingenthal on February 9th, 2009. "Klingenthal was a highlight for me. I hope that there will be more spectators next week in Liberec because of this result."
