Start of the JWSC in Erzurum
In the last third of the winter another highlight of the 2011/12 season is just around the corner: After the successful Youth Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck the young athletes can fight for medals again and that on relatively new territory. They compete for medals in ski jumping, cross country skiing and nordic combined in Erzurum (TUR), close to the Armenian and Georgian border, from February 22nd to 25th. Erzurum follows in the footsteps of other new locations in Eastern Europe that promote the development of the sport in these countries and are awarded with such events by the International Ski Federation.

Located about 2000 m above sea level in eastern Anatolia, Erzurum already hosted the Winter Universiade last year as well as two Continental Cup competitions. The 65 athletes from 17 nations in nordic combined will fight for podium results in one team and two individual competitions.
Known for lang and cold winters, Erzurum is currently living up to its name and temperatures well below zero are awaiting the athletes. While the conditions on the first training days were almost perfect at the various venues, the organizers expect a change in the weather later this week. It remains to be seen if this will have any influence on the events.
As you would expect for this still a bit unusual location, that has a time difference of one hout to central Europe, the trip to Turkey was a bit of an adventure. So teams and officials had to change planes various times, usually there were layovers in Munich, Istanbul and Ankara. Sometimes alsos the planes were not made to handle all the luggage of the athletes.
But now the athletes can look forward to an ultra-modern ski jumping facility named "Kiremitlik Tepe" and is located in the center of the city of Erzurum with its 350 000 inhabitants. The "Kandilli Nordic Ski Center", where the cross country competitions will be held, is located about 37 km away and is, just like the hill, perfectly prepared. Much praise is due to the organizers and volunteers who are laying the foundation for successful competition with their work.
The medalist of the World Championships in Otepaeae last year - Johannes Rydzek, Marjan Jelenko and Kaarel Nurmsalu - will not compete in Erzurum. But with Czech Tomas Portyk, the Gold medalist of the Youth Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck will take part. As well as Ilkka Herola of Finland and Go Yamamoto of Japan who were also on the podium there. Also the German athletes have to be reckoned with. First and foremost Manuel Faisst, who equalled the hill record with 110.5 m on the first day of training. Besides other athletes who already gained experience in the World Cup, also a local hero from Turkey, Mustafa Oztasyonar, will compete.
