First World Cup victory for Jan Schmid
It is the season of premieres in nordic combined, especially for the Norwegian athletes. After Magnus Krog in Kuusamo and Haavard Klementsen in Lillehammer, now Jan Schmid celebrated his first World Cup victory. Schmid won the final sprint against overall World Cup winner Jason Lamy Chappuis from France and the current leader in the overall ranking, Germany's Tino Edelmann.

In contrast to his predecessors, Schmid was not born in Scandinavia. The 28-year-old athlete started for Switzerland at the beginning of his career. But because his mother is Norwegian he changed to Norway because of the better training possibilities. This decision now pays off. "The fact that we have three different winners already shows how strong we are", Schmid praised the work of the Norwegians.
During the whole race it wss not possible to predict the winner. Besides the three athletes on the podium, also Haavard Klementsen, Bernhard Gruber (AUT), Akito Watabe (JPN), Manuel Faisst (GER), Yoshito Watabe (JPN), Wilhelm Denifl (AUT) and Maxime Laheurte were in the leading group. Expect the French, all of these athletes could defend their top positions. The race was so exciting, because the differences after the jumping on the normal hill were not big. Jason Lamy Chappuis, who was the best on the hill, was only 17 seconds ahead of the tenth, Yoshito Watabe.
So the athletes in the leading group fought for the victory. Schmid tested the competition on the final climb and won. He was about 100 m ahead in the last kilometer of the race. "I saved some strength in the first four laps and used this advantage in the final lap", he said about the tactics.
Behind Schmid, the fight was on for the second place between Lamy Chappuis and Edelmann. The French had to fight until the finish line and was closely ahead in the end. The defending champion is now second in the overall ranking with 254 points, ahead of fourth-placed Haavard Klementsen (239). He is now 56 points behind the leader Tino Edelmann.
Now a German should win the second competition in Ramsau. Because with Tino Edelmann and Eric Frenzel, a German always won a day after a Norwegian celebrated his first victory. Maybe the time of Manuel Faisst has come already. The only 18-year-old athlete from the skiclub in Baiersbronn achieved his best World Cup result as seventh. "It's great to keep up with all the athletes I only knew from the TV three years ago. But I don't know if it will go that well again tomorrow", said Faisst.
