Victory for the champion
That's probably not how Tino Edelmann planned it. For a long time it looked as if the German would celebrate his second victory this season in the Gundersen event in Seefeld (AUT). But at the end Jason Lamy Chappuis won and Edelmann was not even on the podium, for various reasons.

First Edelmann dominated the competition at the hill. After his fourth success in the fourth provisional competition round this season, the 26-year-old also won the jumping competition at the Toni-Seelos-hill. He was eight seconds ahead of second-placed Haavard Klementsen from Norway and more than half a minute ahead of the rest of the field.
And also in the track everything went well for Edelmann in the beginning. Klementsen closed the gap pretty fast, but already in the second lap the Norwegian could not keep up anymore and finished only 16th. Edelmann ran the following kilometers in the lead. In the third lap he still had a lead of 22 seconds ahead of a group consisting of Lamy Chappuis, Akito Watabe from Japan and the Austrians Bernhard Gruber and Wilhelm Denifl.
When he thought he would not be able to remain in the lead for the whole race, Edelmann reduced the pace until he was also part of this group. Together with teammate Eric Frenzel, who was fighting to keep up with the group, Edelmann wanted to decide the race on the final meters.
But that did not happen. In the final downhill before the stadium Edelmann collided with Denifl. Both fell and were now out of the group. Tino Edelmann finished 14th, Denifl eleventh. Lamy Chappuis and Watabe played the main role in the final of the race, Alessandro Pittin could close the gap but was not that successful in the end. While Lamy Chappuis won the final sprint against Watabe, Pittin could capture the third place ahead of local hero Bernhard Gruber.
It looks like as if Lamy Chappuis might be able to win the overall World Cup for the third time in a row, what is also the main goal for the season of the 25-year-old. "This was an important day for me on the way to this title. The snow fall made the competition very difficult", said Lamy Chappuis and praised the organizers: "Seefeld is always a nice place and there's a great atmoshpere because of the spectators."
Reason for optimism is the standing in the overall ranking. Lamy Chappuis leads with 454 points, ahead of Tino Edelmann (368 points). Akito Watabe (316 points) is now third. Watabe was surprised by his podium result at the opening in Kuusamo, but now he is more self-confident. "I was hoping for the victory, but Jason was too strong for me. Seefeld is a special place for me because I achieved my first podium result here in 2010", said Watabe.
Third-placed Pittin was still thinking about his performance at the hill. "I know that I'm stronger than Jason in cross country. But I'm always too far behind after the jumping. If I can improve that and can start the race among the ten best, then I can win."
